What happens if I miss a class?

This is a question we get often, and so here is a detailed explanation of our terms and conditions for ‘make up’ classes for our adult programme. For our youth/junior/teen circus classes, we don’t offer any make up class options.

What is a make up class?
A make up class is when you are unable to make it to a class that you are booked into. There are some rules that apply below in order to access a make up (substitute) class.

Why do you have make up classes?
We have the option for make up classes because we want you (as far as possible) to get access to the tuition you have paid for, even if you get unexpectedly ill / injured / have a family emergency or are away with work / are on holiday.

How does it work in practise?
Here is a typical scenario to help you to understand

You are booked into six weeks of silks classes (let’s call it block 1). You are going to be away in week 2 and 3 of the block. Your options for making up are:

  1. Come to an alternative class, with the agreement of the instructor, anytime within block 1

  2. Come to an alternative class, with the agreement of the instructor, anytime within block 2, as long as you have booked into block 2

This gives you a total of 12 weeks, to take all of your block 1 classes and block 2 classes (12 classes in total).

Any block 1 classes not taken in block 1 or 2, cannot be carried to block 3.

Block 2 classes can be made up in block 3 and so on.

Blocks have to be consecutive, so you can’t make up missed classes from block 1 in block 4, even if it block 4 is the second block that you take. Blocks have to be consecutive.

I can’t book into block 2, can I still make up my classes?
No, because if we allow this, then it means students get 12 weeks to take their 6 classes, but the circus only gets income for 6, which doesn’t help us to pay staff / rent / bills. In this case, any missed classes from block 1 will be lost (unless you can book into block 2).

In which classes can I make up my missed classes?
In most cases, there is another class which you can attend to ‘make up’ a missed class. Where there is not another class, for example hammock / cloud then it is possible to attend another class with the agreement of the instructor taking the class you wish to attend. Also if the class time of the most suitable make up class does not work for you (e.g. you come to Tuesday trapeze, but can’t come to the Saturday trapeze class to make up) then talk to your instructor about a suitable alternative.

Can I make up missed classes in open training?
Yes if you can’t attend a taught class. This is new from 3rd June 2024. Please see our timetable for open training times. Remember open training is not a taught class; it’s a time to go over skills you’ve learned in class and feel confident enough to do by yourself.

Can I get my money back for classes missed/that I can’t make up?
No unfortunately we cannot do this. Our make up class policy is very fair. Other circus spaces don’t give you any options if you miss classes, so please don’t ask us to bend our policy as we love our students, and it is hard for us to say no, but ultimately we have to pay our staff, facility costs and more and this policy helps us to do this.

What if I miss a class and advertise it as available

You can post on our Facebook community group if you know you will miss a class and don’t plan to make it up. However, if you give away your class for free (or sell your class to someone) then you can't then go on at a later date to make up the class, as someone will have taken that class credit.
